We've been checked.
This morning as we were driving in to school, the road was closed. All week there was a sign that said "Road Closed June 3". As I hollered (quite gently, I am sure) at the road sign, saying "Today is June 4! And the road is still closed!", Grace said, "Mommy, if today is June 4, then we have doctors appointments at 3 and 3:15".
Thank goodness for her memory! I had honestly forgotten. So after we found a different way to summer school, off we went to the doctors. We were just going to get the okay for the girls to go to summer camp. I will say, there were a few things that were new today.
Our doctor: We have had the same family doctor since 1990. He retired, and we have been lost. We are giving someone new a try, and we met her today.
Peeing in a cup: The new doctor had the girls give urine samples. It was a high point, not necessarily in the act, but in the repetition by my kids "That was so weird" "It's hard to pee in a cup" "I have to tell everyone that I peed in a cup". You know they will.
Bikinis and Bandannas, or The Long Serious Part of the Post: I have vivid memories of sitting on the bleachers in the elementary school gym with all the girls, wearing a 70s string biking top under my clothes, or holding a bandanna for the days you forgot to wear the bikini top. Days when our modesty and our bodies were budding, some of us more than others. Nevertheless, the mixed embarrassment, and excitement and giggles mixed with the stale sweat smell, overlaid with the smell of that day's lunch. You know the day, Scoliosis day. The day the gym teacher checked everyone each year, and no one ever had a problem. I guess maybe I had convinced myself it wasn't really a common problem, but more something that you they started checking for and no one every stopped checking.
The other day, as Andra jumped up to sit next to the tailgate, I thought her back looked a little off. I asked the doctor today, almost as an afterthought, to look at it. For the first time in a long time, I am really sorry I was a little right. She whisked us off to get x-rays, and is giving us a referral to an orthopedist. Bah. So although I know there are worse things around, and that regardless of whether she grows into this or out of it she will survive it, it still made me sad tonight.
No worries, I am sure we'll get it all straightened out.
