A big waste of time

Today we got our groove on and started decorating (finally!).  That means it is time to roll the pumpkins off the back porch for the javelinas to eat, and it's time to hunt down Joseph's head and glue it back on.

Check.  Check.  Moving on to buying a tree, and getting out the boxes.  Check. Check.  Setting up the nativity (Joseph's head included), hanging stockings. Check. Check.

So far, so good.  I love decorating and try to remember it isn't about getting stressed over the extra, pretty clutter lying around, but it is about getting in the mood.  I want the girls to remember getting a little out of control with the decorating, and feeling festive.  I really thought I was kind of good at it.

But last night, after I told Grace we are going to my sister's for Christmas, she asked why we were going to buy a Christmas tree, because it would just be "A big waste".  Then this morning, Andra asked why we were decorating if no one was coming over.

Who are they?  How did they come from me?  I had just told Phil I didn't know if we should hang the outside lights because a) we are running out of time, b) he has an opportunity coming up (Deer. Mexico.  Week before Christmas.)  But now I think I need to step away from the computer and get going.  Maybe I will paint the den red and green while he is off hunting...

We will be Merry and Festive, Damn it!

I am always amazed when my dad tells me about how he did Christmas when he was little - NO DECORATIONS at all . . . until Christmas Eve night, when he went to bed, at which point my grandparents would not only haul out all the presents from Santa, but decorate the entire house and put up and trim the tree. It does have a certain appeal.

    Maybe you could try that?

Yea. Since we won't be home you are welcome to come on down and give that a try. Who needs sleep, right?

It's warmer here than there, anyway.

I'm fighting the "big waste of time" feeling myself this year as well. We're getting our tree this weekend and haven't gotten around to putting lights up yet. I have already put away the nativity set because Martin used a shepherd as a hammer to make marks on the woodwork surrounding the bay window. Sophie keeps trying to reach all things glittery and put them in her mouth, her hair, her pocket. It's been more exhausting than fun so far. Maybe we'll all just wear reindeer antler headbands for the next two weeks and call it Christmas.
